Attorney General Jeff Landry Offers Tips to Safely Celebrate Independence Day

BATON ROUGE, LA – Independence Day is almost here! As Louisiana residents prepare for the patriotic celebrations, family barbecues, and firework displays – Attorney General Jeff Landry encourages all to put safety first.

“I hope everyone keeps this great American holiday safe and fun,” said General Landry. “By obeying all local firework laws and following all firework instructions, we can help make our communities safer.”

Unfortunately, every year hundreds of people end up in the emergency room with firework-related injuries. In order to prevent any mishaps at your event, General Landry encourages the following tips to avoid injuries and celebrate safely:

  • Make sure that fireworks are legal in your area prior to celebrating.

  • Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight one that does not go off after it has been ignited.

  • Store fireworks in a cool, dry place that cannot be accessed by children and pets.

  • Be sure that bystanders observe fireworks displays from a safe distance.

  • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.

  • Never throw or point a firework towards people, animals, vehicles, houses, or flammable materials.

  • Keep a hose or bucket of water handy in case of a malfunction or fire.
