A professional solicitor generally is a person or corporation who
is paid by a charity to raise money or create a charity’s donation campaign on
the charity's behalf. Employees or volunteers of a charity who raise funds for
that charity are not professional solicitors.
By law, the Louisiana Attorney General oversees the activities of professional
solicitors who are contracted to raise money for charitable purposes.
Professional solicitors are required to register with the office of the
Attorney General 10 days before doing business in Louisiana and must renew
their registration annually. The registration must be accompanied by the
payment of a fee in the amount of $150.00.
If the professional solicitor has custody or control of
contributions made to a charitable organization, the professional solicitor
shall file a department-approved bond, at least in the amount of $25,000.00,
with the Louisiana State Treasurer. If you have any questions regarding
charitable registration requirements, please contact our Consumer Protection
Section at 1-800-351-4889 or email gitsc@ag.louisiana.gov.
