Major Victory for New Orleans: Consent Decree Overreach Blocked by Appeals Court

NEW ORLEANS, LA - In a major victory for the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), the community it serves, Attorney General Jeff Landry, and Mayor Latoya Cantrell - the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit blocked federal judge Susie Morgan from mandating New Orleans city employees appear at her command regardless of conflicting city duties and requiring them to do other things not authorized by the federal consent decree.

Siding with the Attorney General and the Mayor, the Fifth Circuit held that nothing in the consent decree allowed for Judge Morgan to force numerous local officials to appear at a press conference and make statements about the consent judgment.

“I am grateful the Fifth Circuit halted this blatant overreach,” said Attorney General Landry. “This consent decree has cost millions of taxpayers dollars, and it has caused more harm than good.”

“The NOPD should be spending their precious time and resources fighting crime, not being forced to appear at a court-ordered press conference and make statements required by the judge approving of the judge’s decisions,” added Attorney General Landry. “The failed consent decree has handcuffed cops with hug-a-thug policies, and it is past time for it to be dissolved.”
