Attorney General Jeff Landry Encourages Businesses to Fight Fraud

BATON ROUGE, LA — With an increase in reports of scams targeting businesses, Attorney General Jeff Landry is educating Louisiana businesses about how to avoid falling victim to con artists or fraudulent companies.

“While we often hear stories of consumers becoming victims of fraud, businesses – especially smaller enterprises – are just as susceptible to scams,” said Attorney General Jeff Landry. “From office supply fraud to fund-raising scams, website cramming to yellow pages scams – Louisiana businesses can become targets of unscrupulous criminals. So I encourage consumers and business owners to utilize our office’s resources designed to help detect, fight, and stop fraud.”

Attorney General Jeff Landry offers the following proactive tips to assist businesses with fighting fraud:

Know your rights. You are not required to pay for goods or services you did not order or authorize. If you receive bills for goods and services you did not order, do not pay.

Review all bills and invoices as soon as they arrive. If you find an error on your bill or invoice, follow the instructions on your statement for filing a dispute.

Assign one or two designated purchasing officers. All sales calls, emails, bills, and invoices should be directed to those designated employees who need to document all purchases.

Train your staff how to respond to telemarketers. Be sure all employees direct every telemarketer to the designated purchasing officer.

Buy from people you know and trust. Beware of "cold" or unsolicited calls. Say "no" to high-pressure sales tactics.

File a dispute with Attorney General Jeff Landry’s Consumer Protection Section. If you receive a suspicious bill, contact Attorney General Jeff Landry’s Consumer Protection Section at 800-351-4889 or www.AGJeffLandry.com.
