Police Union Leader, District Attorney, Sheriff back Attorney General Initiative to Assist Combatting Crime in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA – In an effort to show the partnership which already exists among the Attorney General’s office and other law enforcement entities who are working together to battle crime in New Orleans, AG Jeff Landry has received three letters of support from high ranking leaders.

Police Association of New Orleans (PANO) President Mike Glasser, District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro (D), and Sheriff Marlin Gusman (D) expressed their support for AG Landry’s presence in his New Orleans crime fighting initiative.

“My goal is to raise attention and awareness about the level of crime in New Orleans,” said AG Landry. “We simply cannot turn a blind eye to the escalating violence. Law enforcement agencies need to continue working together on a plan to help solve this problem. I appreciate the cooperation of these leaders and I look forward to working with the Mayor and Chief to achieve these goals.

“In the last 7 years, a variety of adverse circumstances has rendered the New Orleans Police Department less than capable of performing the public safety service that it has historically provided,” wrote PANO President Glasser. “Your attention and contribution to the violent crime problem is both appreciated and welcomed.” (full letter in More Resources)

“I have never seen an Attorney General who takes not only an active interest in the public safety of this city, but who also is willing to devote his precious government resources to accomplish the mission of making our streets safer,” said District Attorney Cannizzaro. “I welcome the State of Louisiana’s chief law enforcement officer’s efforts to battle crime in the New Orleans area,” said Sheriff Gusman. “The LBI Violent Crimes Task Force is a critical addition in the fight against crime performed by a host of law enforcement agencies and task forces.” (full letter in More Resources)

In July 2016, the Attorney General Jeff Landry announced that the Department of Justice’s Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (LBI) would dedicate agents to a Violent Crimes Task Force to assist local, state, and federal law enforcement working to keep New Orleans safe. Since that time, the LBI has worked in conjunction with partners to make and assist in the arrests of violent criminals.
