BATON ROUGE, LA – Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry
participated in the Greenwell Springs Baptist Church’s commemoration
service on the one-year anniversary of the devastating flood of 2016. His prepared remarks are as
follows:
"How many of you, when the rain began to fall and
the waters began to rise, actually looked to the heavens for a solution?
How many of you, after your homes flooded and you lost
precious possessions and heirlooms, questioned God?
How ironic that this nation - a Christian nation - ignores
God 99% of the time, but immediately calls on Him when in need. People like to
ask where God is when bad things happen.
We live in a country where the Ten Commandments are
forbidden in the public square and prayer in school is removed. Then we wonder
how there can be evil and destruction in a country where we exclude our Savior.
You are here today because you know where the answers
lie. You realize that when tragedy strikes your family and your world is turned
upside down, you don't pray to the government to save you; You pray to the
Lord!
Why? Because He is in control, not the government. He
has a plan for you, not the government. He can give you hope and a future, not
the government.
Once we recognize that God is in control is when we will
be on the path to truth and answers. Whether you are faced with tragedy or joy,
life or death, the answers can be found in God.
The love from our friends and neighbors following last
year's devastating flood was a testament for the filling of Jesus' mandate
in Matthew 25:
"Then the King will say to those on his right,
'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance the kingdom
prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave
me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a
stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick
and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' Then the
righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or
thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and
invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or
in prison and go to visit you?' The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you,
whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine,
you did for me.’"
There is no government assistance - no program that will
rebuild your life, home, or soul - like the program of Christ.
